A couple of months ago, I had to spend a few days in hospital due to being involved in a small collision on the road.
I’m perfectly fine, but the whole experience took me by surprise, and I thought you might like to hear how I managed to deal with the financial implications and get back to normal as quickly as possible once I arrived home.
Of course, I couldn’t work for a few days when I was in the hospital, and I lost a significant amount of my wages. Still, as you will see , I didn’t let that issue become too severe.

Hoping I didn’t have to sell all my belongings in a car boot sale, the first thing I did was give my boss a call. They’d been understanding during my time in the hospital, and the company told me to take as much time off as I needed.
However, I still felt like I needed to show some willing, and we all know I needed the extra income. So, I asked my boss if it was possible for me to pick up some extra shifts for a few weeks. Thankfully, they let me work Saturdays which added almost an extra week’s wage to my salary by the end of the month. I used that cash to pay some bills and get back on track.

Like many of you I have some small debts that I pay each month. I was concerned about missing a payment, and I didn’t want to get into trouble or face lots of fees. So, I decided to give my creditors a call and explain the situation. I’m so glad I did that.
While I didn’t know this at the time, my credit card companies plan for instances such as this one, and they have a facility for people like me. They allowed me to make a smaller than usual payment at the end of the first month to give me some breathing space, and I’m very thankful for that. Still, I wouldn’t have known about that if I buried my head in the sand and avoided them.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post; I was in the hospital due to a road traffic accident involving a lorry and my car. After seeing an advert on TV for some people who focus on helping truck accident victims, I decided to give the company a call and ask if they could help.
Again, to my surprise, the people at the other end of the phone were helpful, and they let me know I am entitled to make a claim. While I haven’t received the money yet, it should help to ensure my finances get back in order soon.
Now you know what I did to get back on track after a stay in the hospital, you should feel slightly less concerned about what might happen to you in the same situation. So long as you don’t avoid your creditors and you remain open and honest with everyone, there is always a way to weather the storm.
