Are you getting ready to welcome a grandchild into the world? How very exciting! To help you on this new journey, here are a few top tips.

1 . Support but don’t interfere

Naturally, you’ll want to support your son or daughter as they embark on their own journey of parenthood! You’re bound to feel super excited about becoming a grandparent. The issue is, you won’t want to interfere or step on anyone’s toes.

There’s a fine line between giving support and bossing people around. It’s normal to think you know best, after all, you’ve raised amazing kids yourself! The key is to find a balance and leave the big decisions to the parents.2

2. Ask the parents first

Elaborating on the first point, it’s a good idea to ask the parents what they need. Believe me, I understand how excited you feel about rushing out and buying lots of clothes and toys! Most likely, the parents will want to pick out the majority of the clothing, the pushchair, and so on.

Ask the parents what they need, and ask if there is anything they’d like you to buy. Ask if they’d like to choose the items, or if they are happy for you to go ahead and do this yourself.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a surprise gift or two! But it’s important not to take over. Once you’ve sussed out what the new parents need, head on over to Foryourlittleone. Here you’ll find lots of quality baby supplies, from buggies to toys and bedding.

3. Give parents a rest

New parents tend to get pretty rushed off their feet! I remember this experience all too well! The best way that you can help new parents is to give them a rest, by offering to look after the new baby.

Offering help will give you the perfect opportunity to bond with your new grandchild. Remember, bonding can take a little time, so don’t be worried if you don’t feel it right away.

Helping out doesn’t just mean babysitting, your children might want help in other ways, whether it’s designing your grandchild’s room, or simply cleaning the house.

4. Pass on some wisdom

You’ll have lots of wisdom to share from bringing up your own kids, from bedtime to feeding and learning activities. I bet your grown-up kids will be very glad of this wisdom, so don’t be afraid to share it.

Being a parent is all about learning new things, and practicing until you get it right. No one is perfect and we all need support every now and then.
