I love my dogs and I want them to be around for as long as possible so I can enjoy my time with them and create lots of happy memories. That’s why I’m always looking for ways to make sure that they’re happy and healthy. Looking after a dog is a big responsibility and, just like people, they can be prone to lots of different health problems. A lot of people don’t really know enough about caring for their dog and they end up getting sick more often than usual. That’s why I put together this list of simple ways that you can keep your dog healthy.
Healthy Diet
I like to look after myself and eat good food, so why should my dog be any different. A lot of the big dog food brands out there are actually really unhealthy for your dog but people just don’t realize it. They know that food companies for humans sell junk food but surely they wouldn’t do the same for dogs?
Unfortunately, they do, which is why I always take the time to do a bit of research and find healthy dog food to give them instead. It sometimes costs a bit more but I think it’s worth it if it helps your dog to stay happy and healthy and live a longer life. Weight gain is a big problem in dogs and it can lead to a lot of health problems, which is why I’m always keeping a close eye on them to make sure that they’re not putting on too much weight.
I love treating my dogs, just like everybody else, but you’ve got to make sure that you’re careful. The occasional treat is fine but I try to limit it as much as possible because if you’re giving them too many treats, they’ll start to put on weight.
Good Insurance
I always like to be on the safe side and take my dog to the vets whenever I notice anything slightly out of the ordinary. Most of the time, it’s nothing, but it’s not worth taking the risk and ignoring it. The only problem is, vets can be quite expensive, which is why insurance is a priority. It’s best to go for a more expensive policy that gives you better coverage. That way, you’ll always be able to pay for their treatment, even if they develop a more serious health issue.
Dental Health
I always do regular checks on my dog’s teeth every few days or so to make sure that there aren’t any changes. A lot of people forget this but it’s so important because dental problems in dogs are one of the most common health issues. As they get older, they’re far more likely to develop gum disease, which is why I also like to clean their teeth on a regular basis. If you do notice any changes like red gums, swelling or trouble eating, you should get them to the vet right away.
If you follow these steps like I do, your dog will be happy and healthy and live a much longer life.
