Owning a home can be a blessing and a curse. While it is great to have your own space and the freedom to do what you want, I’m sure most of us will agree that it has its downsides too. One of the worst bits of homeownership is dealing with home maintenance and pesky repair problems that spring up when we least expect them.

As a renter, these kinds of jobs would be the landlord’s problem and end up getting dealt with (and paid for!) on your behalf. But, sadly, the cost of repairs falls on us when we have the honour of being a homeowner.

When things go wrong around the home, these unwelcome surprises are usually a complete pain to sort out and end up costing a fortune too. The only way to reduce the hassle of disasters in the home is to be proactive. Although we would all rather lie-in on a Saturday morning than start our day with some DIY, sometimes, these tasks are necessary.

Keeping on top of home maintenance will help keep many common home issues at bay, so despite the hassle are worth the effort in the long run. Here are some of the home maintenance jobs that we would all like to avoid doing but really shouldn’t:

Booking in Servicing

As we get older, the years fly past, and before you know it is time to get the boiler serviced once again. Servicing costs can seem overly expensive, especially if you don’t seem to be having trouble with your boiler, but regular servicing can extend its life and save you money in the long term.

Servicing your boiler and air conditioning systems (if you have one) is the best way to ensure that you don’t end up freezing during the winter or sweating out the summer because they have broken down. If you need an HVAC Repair or a replacement boiler, it is far better to find out before the seasons change.

Clear Up Outside

We all spend plenty of time cleaning inside our homes, but cleaning the outside is important too. You may want to start with your pathways and drive and also clean up the decking and patio if you have them too. Jet washing these outdoor areas will get them looking like new again pretty quickly, and I guarantee that you will find the process of pressure washing incredibly satisfying if you haven’t done it before.

Using the water to blast away all the dirt and grime from these areas is a lot of fun! Don’t forget to remove all the moss, too, as this can be incredibly slippery on rainy days and you don’t want to slide up in front of the neighbours!

One less satisfying task is clearing the gutters. Scooping out all the leaves and debris is not fun, but it will help to prevent damage to the side of the house. If you want to stay safe, you can always pay a professional to do it for you.
