Women over sixty are always eager to see the world. Well, I know I am anyway. In fact, it’s one of the things most of us look forward to when we retire. That being said, the cost of it all isn’t quite so enjoyable. No matter where you go, travelling is an expensive hobby, which leaves many people feeling like they just can’t afford it. But money should never stop you achieving your dreams, here are a few ways you can cut travel costs and save cash.
1. Look For Senior Discounts
Unbeknownst to many, getting older does have some benefits, with one of the most significant being the senior discounts. Considering how many things we have to buy when we travel, being able to save even 10% when we shop can make all the difference. For this reason, you should always make sure you ask about deals before you pay. Just make sure you have ID with you.
2. Shop With Cashback Apps
That being said, many airlines no longer offer discounts for those over sixty, making air travel quite costly. However, there are some cashback apps out there that give you money back when you buy plane tickets. Other options, like Dosh, allow you to save on hotels and restaurants, which is also useful. These apps can seem complicated to use at first, but they are quite simple.
3. Book During Off Season
For the biggest savings, you’re going to want to avoid summer and major holidays and stick to the offseason instead. Thankfully, as a lady over sixty, my schedule is more flexible than most, making this possible. If you can do the same, then you’ll save on almost everything, from flights to attractions. Many destinations stay sunny during these periods, so you’ll still have a great time.
4. Holiday In A Holiday
Everyone knows that direct flights tend to cost more than those with a layover. With that in mind, you may want to pick flights with a connection or two. If this means that you’ll have several hours to wait, then why not extend your trip with a free stopover. Many airlines are happy to give you an additional day or two, allowing you to explore a new city cross it off your bucket list.
5. Stay Away From Hotels
Most of us automatically start to look for hotels when planning a holiday, but considering how costly they can be, they’re not always the best option. For this reason, you should consider the alternatives out there, including holiday rentals and even hostels. Most assume that hostels are for young travellers, but, if you look hard enough, there are options suitable for those a bit older.
6. Go With The Girls
Whatever accommodation you choose, you’ll probably find it cheaper when booking as a group. Because of this, you should consider planning a getaway with the girls or your family, instead of going alone. If nothing else, this gives you and your companions time to bond and have fun together, which, in my eyes, is one of the most valuable things in the world.
Money (or age) shouldn’t hold you back from your travel dreams, so remember the money-saving tips above and go and book a trip.
