Things I Wish I’d Known About Business Before Starting My Blog

I won’t lie, it feels like I’ve been running this blog for a lifetime. The general blogging landscape has certainly changed a lot during that time.

It has got me thinking about what I wish I knew about blogging when I started. Not least because I know that some of my lovely readers have probably thought about starting a blog themselves. Hopefully, if you fall into this category, my tips will be handy.

While I never started this platform with financial gains in mind, I wish I knew how much money bloggers can make. The top-earning content creators earn astronomical figures. I doubt I’ll ever even aspire to reach those levels – but you can.

And that leads me to my next point. Even when wanting to earn money, nothing beats an authentic voice. It might not have been about money but there are times when I’ve tried to write what I think will get the most views. Ultimately, it is far better to write about what you know and love. If it matters to you, there will be an audience of people who care too. Even niche topics can generate a significant number of views.

Moreover, it creates a connection with the reader. Resonating with the readers is arguably the most important ingredient in the recipe for success. Interacting with them is vital because it is one of the main advantages over other forms of writing. Social media is a great outlet for this. Readers are also a great source for developing a writing voice and style. I’ve found that using positive comments and ‘shares’ as a barometer of engagement rather than views alone is a very useful tactic. For example, my post on saving money has resulted in some readers stating the tips have improved their life. Frankly, that fills me with immense pride.

Another key factor, especially for those wanting to make money from blogging, is to find the balance between quality and quantity. A consistent feed is needed to keep people coming back, which will be vital when selling products. On the other hand, adding content that adds no insight into a topic (or you as a person) can have a negative impact. I would suggest that new bloggers use this site for concept and title ideas. Just be sure to only use the right ones.

I also now know that other bloggers aren’t really competition. People can be loyal to more than one blog. Likewise, collaborative efforts often yield the best content. Embracing the community rather than turning your back on it can work wonders for the blog as well as personal enjoyment levels.

Finally, I wish that I knew that blogging is ultimately a tool to improve your life. Whether wanting to vent anger, inspire others, or teach people about a passion doesn’t matter. If blogging makes you feel good, that’s the biggest success of all. However, I have also found that it needs to fit in with the rest of your life. Balance is the key to success.
