How To Show Support For Your Children During Tough Times

If you know that one, or more of your children are going through a tough time right now then you will know how difficult this can be as a parent. As a parent myself, I know how heartbreaking it can be to see your kids struggle, and that is why I have listed some top tips below, on how you can show support for your children.

Be Reassuring

Make it clear to your children that you will always be there for them. Tell them that too. I always tell my kids that they can come to me if they need me and that they are going to get through this. I let them know that I will always be by their side and that I am rooting for them even during their darkest moments.

Listen and Don’t React

Active listening is something I highly recommend. Active listening lets young people know that they can talk freely and that you are not going to judge them. If you choose to react to your kids with criticism every time they share something with you then this will add to the stress that they are under. They may also end up withdrawing as a result. I know how difficult this can be for you and them, and it’s something I have experienced first-hand.  One thing I’d suggest here is for you to simply be open-minded, show your support, and take onboard their thoughts. If you can do this then you will be able to see things from their perspective a little more.

Communicate

Listen to your child and tell them not to withhold information due to fear of upsetting you. You will feel better if you know what is truly going on, so ask them to tell you everything. I always tell my kids this, as it encourages them to open up. If they are going to an IVF clinic then listen to them about the process and what they may have on their mind. You can even offer to drive them there if they want some more support. I think that showing your child support isn’t about hoovering up their problems, but it is about standing beside them as they find their own way through life. If you can do this then you are bound to see a huge improvement in their general happiness.

Get Support

Ensure that you have enough strategies in place to manage your stress. I know this from experience. Your children won’t worry about you if you can show them that you are committed to seeking help. Let them know that you view asking for help as being a sign of strength and that you are always happy to help and support them through the difficult moments. If you can let them know this then you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to guide them through these dark times, as well as letting them know that there is in fact a light at the end of the tunnel.
